International online application

Online international students are those who are not currently citizens, permanent residents or refugees in the U.S. and attending ASU through our online campus modality. Online international students are not issued an I-20 to travel to the U.S. for school, but instead participate remotely in world-class learning.

Review international student English language proficiency requirements

If you’re a citizen of an English-speaking country, proof of English proficiency isn’t required.

If you aren’t a citizen of an English-speaking country, you must provide proof of English proficiency.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The general required score for the TOEFL is 61 (iBT or internet-based test) for undergraduate and graduate admission. Learn more about TOEFL.

ASU’s institutional code is 4007. ASU accepts only electronic copies of the TOEFL score report.

Bachelor of Science in nursing: minimum score of 76.

Ira. A Fulton Schools of Engineering (higher admission requirement programs only): minimum score of 79.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication: minimum score of 100.

Note: ASU accepts the TOEFL iBT® taken in a testing center. ASU does not accept TOEFL iBT® Home Edition, TOEFL iBT® Paper Edition or TOEFL Essentials Exams.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The general required score for the IELTS Academic test is an overall band score of 6.0 for undergraduate and graduate admission. No institutional code is needed when taking the exam, and the general training exam is not accepted. Get more information about IELTS.

Note: ASU accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI and IELTS Indicator exams.

Bachelor of Science in nursing: minimum score of 6.5.

Ira. A Fulton Schools of Engineering (higher admission requirement programs only): minimum score of 6.5.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication: minimum score of 7.0.

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

The general required score for the PTE is a minimum of 53 for undergraduate and graduate admission. Explore details about PTE.

Note: The Bachelor of Science in nursing program does not accept this test for admission. Also, ASU does not accept the PTE Academic Online exam.

Ira. A Fulton Schools of Engineering (higher admission requirement programs only): minimum score of 58.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication: minimum score of 73.

Global Launch

ASU accepts completion of the Global Launch English language program or English for Admission and Achievement online self-paced course. Learn more about Global Launch.

English language program:
Complete the highest level of the campus or online immersion English language program with a passing grade of B- (80%) or better.

Online self-paced course:
Complete the English for Admission and Achievement online course with a passing score.

Duolingo English test

The general required score for the Duolingo English test is 95 for undergraduate and graduate admission. Learn how the Duolingo English test works.

Bachelor of Science in nursing: minimum score of 100.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication: minimum score of 120.

Cambridge English Exams

The general required score for Cambridge English Exams is 170 for undergraduate and graduate admission. Learn how to send your Cambridge English scores to ASU.

Note: ASU accepts the B2 First, C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency Cambridge English exams.

Bachelor of Science in nursing: minimum score of 176.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication: minimum score of 185.

Apply to ASU as an international student

International applicants who currently reside outside the U.S. should select the visa type “JN” when completing the application. This designation indicates you will not be entering the U.S. and no financial guarantee documents will be required.

Student visas are not available to online students. Students who are currently residing in the U.S. under an F1 student visa may not enroll in online programs.

Pay the application fee

You may pay with a credit card when you submit the online application. If you didn’t submit your application fee with your admission application, you have a few options for making your payment:

Do not send cash or international postal money orders. Application fees cannot be waived or transferred to a future application. Cost of application to ASU Online is $70.

Submit your transcripts

Official transcripts are certified copies of official documents from each secondary school, college, university and/or technical school attended.

To process an ASU application, all international records must be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Translations must be literal, complete versions of original records, and a university, a government official or an official translation service must translate the documents. Students cannot perform their own translation.
