Government of Sierra Leone, together with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, has set up and formally launched a Presidential Taskforce on Mental Health on Tuesday, 16th May 2023 at Radisson Hotel, Freetown. Vice President, Dr. Juldeh Jalloh, explained in his keynote address the essence of soliciting high-level and multi-sectoral support in responding to mental health. conditions. He referenced the Minister of Health & Sanitation, Dr. Austin Demby’s Life Stages Approach in ensuring a compound approach that caters for the complete well-being of everyone. Presidential Advisor on Mental Health, Dr. Carol Labor, dilated on the physical and socio-economic impact of mental health and the urgency of care it requires. Revolutionizing Emergency Response by Introducing the Public Health Emergency Operation Center Handbook in Sierra Leone I am thrilled to share some amazing news with you all! The Directorate of Health Security and Emergencies, Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone, has embarked on a groundbreaking move for public health emergency management. Initiating the “Public Health Emergency Operation Center Handbook”! This comprehensive handbook, when finalized, will serve as a game-changer in enhancing emergency response capabilities in Sierra Leone. It provides detailed guidelines, protocols, and best practices for setting up emergency operation centers during public health crises. The handbook covers a wide range of critical topics, including incident management, coordination, communication strategies, data collection and analysis, resource mobilization, and more. It serves as a vital tool for health officials, emergency responders, and other stakeholders involved in disaster preparedness and response. And also cover elements of the PHEOC Legal Framework that establish and/or strengthen legal authorities for Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) and Public Health Emergency Operations Centers (PHEOC). “By developing this handbook, the Directorate of Health Security and Emergencies is taking proactive measures to strengthen Sierra Leone’s capacity to effectively manage public health emergencies. This resource will contribute to a more coordinated, efficient, and resilient response to future crises.
